Humanities and Social Sciences – Quality of Life

Research in human, social and quality of life sciences focuses on both the patient’s feelings about their illness and treatment; but also on the factors that influence their participation in screening.
This line of research is facilitated with regard to gynecology and breast cancers thanks to a specialized registry of gynecological cancers in Côte d’Or.
The latter has existed for more than 20 years and, for each patient, treated at the center or in other establishments in the region, lists their social but above all medical data (treatments, therapeutic responses, etc.).
These data contribute to the epidemiological surveillance of gynecological cancers in France and are used by researchers to set up studies based on population data leading to scientific publications.

Research in human, social and quality of life sciences is divided into two themes:
With particular focus on identifying socio-economic factors influencing participation in breast cancer screening, with the aim of improving participation in organized breast cancer screening. In this area, the CGFL coordinates with the Gustave Roussy Institute, the CANTO cohort, funded by the French National Research Agency. This cohort, which follows more than 12,000 women with early-stage breast cancer for 5 years, will make it possible to evaluate and predict the long-term toxicities of treatments.
In cancer care, the assessment of health-related quality of life plays an integral role in the assessment and choice of treatments, in the management and follow-up of patients. In addition, since early diagnosis and effective treatment methods have led to an increase in the number of long-term survivors, quality of life is particularly important for people in remission from their disease. The work carried out on this topic focuses mainly on the impact of the disease on people’s lives, the clinical and socio-economic determinants of quality of life and the value of its routine assessment in the management of people with cancer.
This theme is developed by a team of epidemiologists, members of the National Quality of Life and Cancer Platform, certified by the National League against Cancer and whose objective is to pool the skills of researchers at the national level in order to promote quality of life in cancer research.

PROJECT NAME: Breast cancer in young women in France: living conditions after the disease and identification of sexuality profiles and fertility profiles
The European Union is co-funding a project to study the post-cancer living conditions (fertility, sexuality, return to work, quality of life, etc.) of young women diagnosed with breast cancer in France. This project also aims to identify the needs considered a priority by young women in improving the care and experience of the disease from diagnosis to post-cancer. This national research project is being carried out in collaboration with the registries of the French network of cancer registries (FRANCIM).
