Brain tumors

Description

The number of new cases of malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors in France in 2018 was estimated at 5,886, 56% of which were in men.

Brain tumors are any tumors that develop inside the skull. They can develop in any area of the brain: the hemispheres, the cerebellum, the brainstem, the pituitary gland, etc.

The location of the tumor is an essential element in the choice of treatments.

Treatments

There are different treatment options, which may be offered to you alone or in combination: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy.

Depending on the case, they aim to eliminate the entire tumor; to reduce the risk of recurrence; to contain the development of the tumor; to relieve and prevent the symptoms caused by the tumor.

SURGERY

Whenever possible, surgery is the first treatment to consider. The goal is to remove as much of the tumor as possible. After surgery, the tumor is analyzed in a pathology laboratory. This analysis helps refine the diagnosis and decide on further treatment.

CHEMOTHERAPY AND/OR RADIOTHERAPY

Radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy may be used to complement surgery. These treatments aim to eliminate remaining tumor cells and limit the risk of recurrence.
